Marmaris
is another excellent place in which to shop. It is an
interesting mixture of old and new. Narrow streets reveal
courtyards with intimate bars and restaurants while
the large new marina shows that Marmaris has become
the biggest yachting centre on this part of the Turkish
coast. From Marmaris going east the landscape changes
from rocky bays and hillsides of olive trees to steep
slopes of pine trees running down to the sea. From here
to Fethiye and beyond around every corner you will find
history. The tombs of Caunus must be one of the most
magnificent sights. Your gulet will pull in to Ekincik
Bay and from there a flat bottommed boat will take you
up the narrow delta to the ruins of the ancient city
and the Lycian rock tombs cut into the hillside. Further
on through tall reeds and fish traps, the delta opens
into Lake Köyceğiz where you can swim or bathe in the
muddy of a sulphur bath.
