Fethiye
itself is a lively cosmopolitan town, especially at
night when ahops stay open late and music from the many
bars gives the place a party atmosphere. Just past Fethiye
sandy beaches stretch on towards Antalya, you can anchor
behind Gemiler Island where villagers in rowing boats
deliver fresh bread every morning and the well known
lagoon of Ölüdeniz is just around the corner. Kalkan,
a town of narrow hillside streets and buildings of stone
and wood, is an excellent place from which to visit
by land the many archaeological sites in the area, for
example Letoon, Patara and Xanthos. Kaş is another pretty
coastal town further on just a short distance from the
tiny Greek Island of Castelorizon. To appreciate how
easily Turkish people live with their past you have
to visit Kekova Roads where ancient ruins litter the
sea bed. Villagers have built their houses around centuries
old monuments, and tombs cover the hillsides and stand
eerily in the shallow waters around the villages. Tours
to Myra can also be arranged from here. From Kekova
to Antalya the landspace flattens out but is no less
beautiful. Finike and Kemer are likely stops on the
way, both small towns. Between these towns, the historical
sites of Olympos and Phaselis are worth seeing.
